“Just Do It” Skin Care

It’s easy to believe that taking care of your skin (and your self) is too much trouble, but there are rewards to committing to the care of your skin.  It pays you back for the attention you give it now, so think of it in terms of the old Nike adage and “Just Do It”.  Here’s a simple, basic routine.

In the morning:

  1. Cleanse: for dry skin, use a non- foaming cleanser (cream or milk), for oily skin- foaming cleaner.  Do not use bar soap- it can dry and damage the skin barrier that is necessary for healthy skin.

  2. Use an antioxidant product that protects from free radicals (vitamin c is good because it not only protects the skin from free radical damage, it also assists the skin in making collagen). If you use a vitamin c, make sure it hasn’t oxidized (turned brown).  This means it’s no longer effective.  It should also be in packaging that doesn’t allow light or air into the bottle.

  3. Use a good sunscreen. We love Circadia’s Light Day Sunscreen.  It contains SolaStay (Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene), which prevents irritation and leaves the skin with a perfect finish for makeup application.

In the evening:

  1. Make SURE you wash your face.  You need to get the debris from the day and all the pollution off of your skin.  (Pollution actually penetrates into the body via the skin.)

  2. Use an antiaging cream with a good form of retinol (retinaldehyde is a favorite), growth factors (can be expensive) or peptides.  Vitamin A is the Gold Standard for antiaging, and you should be able to find a form that works with your skin and actually increase to stronger products as your skin adjusts.  Use with care if retinol tends to aggravate your skin.  If you have irritation, dryness or redness, take a break.  Then apply less often or just use less per “dose”.

  3. Every 3 days or so, exfoliate the skin with a gentle scrub.  This removes the buildup of dead skin cells and creates a clean canvas for your antiaging products to be able to penetrate into the skin more efficiently.

*Always apply your actives (your daytime antioxidant and your antiaging cream) to slightly damp skin as this allows for better penetration.

You can always add more to your routine once you’ve built up “endurance” with the basics.  Skin care and self-care are life long practices so we might as well get good at it.
